Just What I Needed for Small Office, but Here’s Some Set up Tips, February 22, 2015

I am computer literate and usually do just fine with device set ups. This was a bit challenging but I found the Cannon support number to yield short wait times and very helpful techs. Here are a few things that I encountered that might help you: 1) While there are colored buttons on the front panel the “on button” was difficult to find! It is found in the front in the lower left corner, colored all in black, when you know where to find it, easy to then find. 2) I plugged the USB cable in the wrong slot in the back so of course even with DVD installation all complete my lap top did not recognize the printer. So, to be clear: plug the USB cord into the slot in the back that has a silver screw next to it. 3) Follow all instructions to the letter on the setup DVD and only plug in the USB cable at the point you are told to do so. (You have to provide your own USB cable, as with most printers, this is the case with this one). I also selected this model because I have no need for a wireless printer and this model advertises as only for USB set up, less options to confuse me at set up were my thoughts! The print quality is awesome, crisp, clear printing. The paper “tray” is not really a tray that can be removed, so it is a bit of a challenge to get much paper into the paper intake area located at the bottom of the unit. That is why I gave 4 stars. In my opinion it does NOT comfortably hold 250 sheets or it will mis-feed. It seems to work best at about 3/4 full capacity. I need an automatic document feeder for work purposes, not everyday, just once and awhile and this paper feed is very good, takes about 30 pages at a time, no issues there. 4) The power cord on this unit seems shorter than on other printers I’ve bought. I don’t like using extension cords, fortunately I have an outlet fairly nearby or it could have been a problem. The starter toner cartridge has already printed 300 sheets. About 8 years ago I bought a Cannon printer and have it at home, a laser jet, and it is still going strong, that is one reason I decided on this brand again. Also another reason I decided on Canon: being able to talk easily to tech person is awesome. With some other brands I’ve had in the past, the tech call center for the printer divisions are understaffed equating to long wait times.

Excellent print quality, easy setup, and the scanning and faxing and copying functions are easy to use. The only downside is the cost of toner, which is a bit on the high side.

Very nice printer, copier, fax, and scanner. You must download the pdf file for this printer, or you will not know all the features and how to use them. The instructions that come with it are just to hook up the printer. You will need to know how to get around with the Software installation disk because there are different programs on the disk that you will want to install. You will need a Cat 5 Ethernet Cable or a USB to Printer High Speed Cable, and an extra phone cable to go from printer to phone.
I have only one phone line so I bought a Telephone splitter that I plugged into my Vonage VOIP and from there I plugged one line into my phone, and the other line to the bottom phone plugin on the printer; however, I do not believe this is necessary because you can plug your wall line into the bottom of the printer, and a phone line from the top plugin of the printer to your phone itself and I believe the phone will still work with the machine off. I cannot receive faxes while I am on the phone, but when I am off of the phone the faxes come in very nice; you can test your fax with Canon’s auto test number which is 18553922666.

Your download to learn how to use the Printer, Scanner, Fax, and Copier is located at:

If you are a Home/Office and your company wants a system that Does Not Have a wireless feature because of safety reasons, then this is the Printer/Scanner/Copier, and Fax machine you want. Just remember that if you want to receive faxes while you are on the phone, I believe you need a 2 line phone system; one that is dedicated to the fax, and one that is dedicated to the phone, however, the system does work on a one line phone system, but you just need to make sure no one is using the phone, and the faxes come in very nicely.

When the system is not in use you can simply put a large plastic garbage bag over it for a waterproof cover and dust cover; however, like all devices let them cool down first in order not to trap heat.

I have not used the quiet mode because to me it is not very loud, and just to print out one fax, or one letter the machine is so fast that by the time it starts the printing is over.

The Starter Cartridge that came with it says it is at 100 Percent full which is unusual for starter cartridges because they are usually about only 50 percent full.
If you are interested in a good telephone splitter; this is the one I purchased; however, you do not need it for this printer.
