The packaging is very easy to open, eco friendly recycled cardboard, wheat straw, and soy ink. I’m a current Chromebook user, so the whole process of unpacking and having my entire Chrome experience was about 10 minutes. Google oft mentions Chromebooks are for sharing, which they are, but they are also fantastic when upgrading our replacing a broken device. Gone are the times when a new laptop meant several days of restoring and installing.

The Asus is a very attractive blue color with a few silver accents. All plastic construction, but it feels sturdy, while being really lightweight. No flex anywhere on my model, nothing creaking as I type. Only one little green LED the tells you the machine is on, nice and simple.

The display is glossy, bright and has a reasonable viewing angle, not a high end display but comfortable enough.

The keyboard and trackpad are very good. The keys have a nice touch, tactile feel, and rebound. I feel like I can type full speed on this keyboard and do it for hours. The trackpad is the perfect size, out of the way when typing, while being quite responsive to touch. Solid performance on input!

I ran a few benchmarks, such as Google Octane, and the machine comes in at about 7200 on Google’s test. Not bad. Actual browsing does exhibit some lags on graphic intensive pages, but overall the browsing experience is fluid and enjoyable. Videos play well, resolution is fair, and the sound is really quite good for such a small unit. Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, all ran quickly with no stuttering or other issues.

The charger is tiny, which is good. It looks like a micro-USB but it isn’t, size wise the charger and plug are comparable to a phone charger.

I haven’t had the machine long enough to gauge battery life, but several hours of operation and the charge is still 90+%, so I expect the life to be good (13 hours is the spec).

WiFi performance seems excellent. It connected to my D-Link router quickly, and has full bars of strength well past my other WiFi devices, and delivered stellar results on broadband speed tests.

I really can’t find any faults with this machine. It is a solid, attractive, nice performing unit at a great price. For an everyday carry device it is light (the unit is 2 pounds 3 ounces on my scale), easy to use, and has a battery that should last longer than I can most days.

    Update May 13th:

Battery Life under general browsing with a few short videos tossed on my machine is 12 hours. Charge time is under 90 minutes from nearly empty to full. Really good.

Also attached a pix of the adapter. It is very light and compact. The charger is 6 feet long (it seems a bit short to me). The metal conductors do not fold in.

Still really happy with this Chromebook!

Couldn’t be happier with this Chromebook, May 9, 2015

Couldn’t be happier with this Chromebook. I am a heavy Apple user, but was eyeing a Chromebook for months as a lighter, power-friendly alternative for both travel and bouncing around the office. After doing a ridiculous amount of research, I was expectantly awaiting the release of this model due to it’s light weight and quoted 13 hours of battery life. Now that it has arrived, I’m happy to say that it has completely lived up to expectations on both fronts. It is super light and lasts forever. The build quality is also really solid for a sub $200 device.

The keyboard and trackpad were both a great surprise. I was initially unsure about typing for long hours on the c201’s keyboard, but within a few hours I was typing rapidly, accurately, and comfortably. The trackpad is also a star. It’s comfortable and fluid, and works about as well as the one on my Macbook Pro. Overall, both the keyboard and trackpad make the device a pleasure to use.

I’m not a Linux user, which is why I was comfortable going with a non-Intel chip, but I hear if that’s what you’re after this may not be the processor for you. I can say that with the 4gb version, it has kept up to every task I’ve thrown at it so far (Netflix, youtube, tons of Google docs, and browser based screenwriting apps). In my opinion, if you need much more, you probably shouldn’t be looking at a Chromebook anyway. But if you’re comfortable with the always-online nature of Chrome OS, than this chromebook definitely has you covered in terms of performance.

I could easily see this becoming the go-to device in the house, getting more use than both my Macbook Pro and my iPad.

This is my first time using a Chromebook and I didn’t know what to expect. I mean it’s sort of like a laptop in size but it runs on Chrome, not Windows.

Start-up was fast, almost super fast. You open the cover and BAM, within seconds, you’re online. Very cool.

The display is HD and very crisp. I viewed a couple of Netflix nature movies and the display was stunning. No lag or fuzziness. There’s a Micro HDMI so you can view on a big screen, but a cable is not included.

The wi-fi is dual-band 802.11 and is fast as well. I had no issues connecting at home, work, or the local coffee shop.

There is 16gb of local storage, but Google includes 100gb of Google Drive storage for 2 years. Personally I’ve never used more than 3gb of storage, so 100gb should be adequate for most people.

The internal speakers weren’t great, but they didn’t suck either. Sound was crisp but slightly muted. A pair of USB speakers took care of this. Soon I was rocking in the coffee shop (i forgot my headphones).

Because of my big fingers I’m not a fan of the pad thingy. I was able to plug in a bluetooth mouse and was up and running within 30 seconds. At first I wasn’t sure if the Chromebook would allow peripherals, but it did with no issues.

The battery is stated to last 13 hours. I haven’t gone that far yet, but I’ve gotten a solid 5 hours of mixed internet/video streaming use and still had 50% battery left.

The fit and finish is top notch although the top cover can be a finger print magnet. I just throw a microfiber cloth in my bag.

The keyboard has ample sized ‘chicklet’ keys which are soft and silent. My big fingers had no issues hitting other keys by accident.

    In closing, I’m a convert!

My laptops were mainly used for the internet and watching movies. With everything online, like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime movies, this Chromebook rocks!
